Season Summary
|
This completes my first season as the head coach of EHS Varsity Football team, as well as another exciting season of Hornet Football! There were significant changes to the program and coaching staff. Clay Erro stepped down as varsity coach due to health issues' Brian Guilfoile, longtime line coach, also stepped down due to retirement. This created a tremendous void and a decade of dedication that was filled by adding new staff members and reorganizing current staff. Both Erro and Guilfoile continued to give much support and provided a smooth transition. The pressure to overcome success was met with tremendous professionalism and loyalty. I was hired as the head football coach in January and set out putting together three outstanding coaching staffs. The varsity staff includes myself, offensive coordinator; Ray Hermann, defensive coordinator; Ron Wooley (moved from junior varsity), line coach: Robert Boone, line coach and Jerry Watson, linebackers. This group unselfishly met every challenge presented them and shaped this year's team into a winner. The team, which started with 37 players, ended with 30 dedicated players and ended 10-2. Jim Schwerdt headed the JV staff. His dedication and contributions were immeasurable and will pay dividends in the years to come. Scott Sutfin and Dan Vorhees assisted the JV team this year and produced many positive results. The team had a 9-1 season and landed in first place, keeping over 40 players on the roster. The Freshman staff was also reorganized. Mike Worley accepted the head coaching position and gave the program stability and structure. Scott Lee was added to the staff this year and coordinated the defense. Cliff Curry also volunteered his time and coached a talented group of young linemen. This year's freshmen have set the tone for positive experiences in the future. They produced a successful 9-1 season. The reorganization of the staffs went smoothly, and I feel fortunate to work with the most dedicated staff in the north state.

| Year Overview | |
|
The season started with 60 prospects signing up
in February. Weight lifting and conditioning continued through May with the
help of Coach Herman. We completed nine days of spring practice in
May, culminating with out outgoing seniors hosting a farewell barbecue. The
River Bowl trophy was passed down, and many fond farewells were shared. The
incoming eighth graders were introduced to the Hornet Football Program. The
summer weightlifting workouts began in June and continued until August. The
workouts were well attended despite the condition of the campus due to the
remodeling and construction. Varsity players again attended the Shasta
College passing league. The results were good for coaches and players alike
as the two groups began to build relationships that became the foundation of
the team. Out staff organized and hosted the first annual Enterprise Hornet
Football Camp. The camp was a success as many of our incoming ninth graders
participated and gained valuable knowledge for the upcoming season. The JV
and Varsity camps were equally successful. The players and coaching staff
were able to further the relationships started in the spring and set the
tone for the rest of the summer and the beginning of the fall season.
We started official practice August 12 with tow-a-day practices at
Enterprise High School. The roster was down to 37 players due to normal
summertime attrition. We concluded the first week of practice with our
annual trip to McCloud High School Once again the McCloud trip was a huge
success. Friday and Saturday camp activities included many practice
sessions, great meals at Raymond's Restaurant and a motivational
presentation by Coach Erro. Jim Tomisin and Jim Earle graciously provided
the athletic training for the weekend. Mr. Wise, Mr. Mack, Mr. Angley, Mr.
Carpenter and many members of the freshman and JV staff volunteered their
time and efforts to make our stay in the mountains a success. The camp
culminated with a fantastic breakfast provided by Mr. and Mrs. Angley and
Mr. and Mrs. Carpenter. For the past two years, the Sunday breakfast has
brought about a wonderful conclusion to our camp and helped rejuvenate
players and coaches alike for the rigors of the upcoming season. We finished
our second week of practice with the annual Black and Gold Scrimmage.
Parents and players from all three levels participated. A parent meeting,
barbecue and fundraiser concluded the day's activities. The season started
off successfully with nine straight wins. Big wins against Corning and a shutout
against West Valley (WV juniors were previously unbeaten) helped us gain
confidence offensively and defensively. Brody Angley created many opportunities
for our offense. His drive to make big plays gave our offense the ability to
score from anywhere on the field. His presence allowed other players the ability to
come into their own offensively. Chase Sutfin provided a solid backfield
option and an explosive backfield combination. This solid running game
allowed other members of the offense to get comfortable in their roles.
Major contributions came from a majority of players: Kao Saelee, junior - flanker;
Mitchell Guhy, senior - QB; and Carlos DeSoto, junior - WR, to name a few.
This helped give our offense balance, which was hard to defense against.
Defense again was our strength. Our strong efforts on the defensive side of
the ball continued to give us opportunities to win games. Coach Hermann did
an outstanding job of coordinating the defense this year and continued the
tradition of great Enterprise defenses. Taking over a defense that had
several returning starters, he was able to build one of the strongest
defenses in the north section, giving up only 12.5 points per game. Many
players thought the year made valuable contributions. Seniors Yousef Bhatti
and Josh Ramirez, both of which made tremendous sacrifices in our efforts to
stop the run, anchored our defensive line. The line-backing corps, led by
seniors Chase Sutfin and Jason Valliere, was solid all year making many big
plays in big games to separate us from our opponents. Senior Brody Angley
led the defensive backfield. His presence gave our young defensive backs an
opportunity to grow and learn the system. Juniors Kao Saelee and Carlos
DeSoto did just that, creating one of the most athletic secondary in the
north section. This defense didn't get the recognition they deserved this
year, but it was definitely the foundation of our success. The following
seven games provided big wins in league including Pleasant Valley, Foothill,
and out 11th straight River Bowl victory over Shasta! The final game of the
season was played up with tremendous hype. We were undefeated, 9-0, and
facing a Red Bluff team that was also 9-0. This loss was a major disappointment
to our team, but we regrouped and entered into the playoffs as the No. 3
seed. We rebounded against Pleasant Valley and won a thrilling game at the
Nest, holding PV on the 4th and goal with less than a minute left on the
clock. This win put us in the semi finals against the NO, 2 seeded Paradise
Bobcats. Injuries and illness caught up to our team, and we were
disappointed to end our season in the semi-finals. I am thankful for the
tremendous support that was given by our administration, boosters and
parents and the contributions that our coaches and players exhibited all
season. We gave it our all, and we have no regrets. We are once again faced
with the task of overcoming our past success.
